For any and all interested, there is a great link on the page that will take you to the PBS site with a link and synopsis of their series on the history of photography as an art and communications form. It is fairly comprehensive in its overview from a historical perspective.

As a fine art form in the digital era, photography continues to evolve in leaps and bounds, especially with the advent of "instant" feedback and also post processing options.

Instant feedback also affords many photographers to get the shot that would have been missed in the 35mm tripod days in landscape photo, news and editorial illustrations, and more.
